Jean Leray et les fondements mathématiques de la turbulence

En 1934, un jeune mathématicien français, Jean Leray (1906-1998), publiait dans la revue Acta Mathematica un article devenu rapidement célèbre : « Sur le mouvement d'un fluide visqueux remplissant l'espace ». Il s’agissait donc d’étudier mathématiquement un problème physique très parlant : l’écoule-ment d’un fluide — comprendre par exemple les tourbillons que l’on peut observer lorsqu’on regarde couler la Seine.
