Higher-order spike patterns in cortex (and model)

By Sonja Gruen

It has been proposed that spatio-temporal spike patterns (STPs) are expressions of active cell assemblies. Here we show that such STPs indeed occur in motor cortex, and that different cell assemblies are active in different phases of motor behavior. ‚Recordings‘ from a model of realistic cortical neuronal density that contains multiple embedded synfire chains show the occurrence of STPs in well agreement.
