Genetics, the science of heredity, tends to be equated nowadays with the study of variations in DNA sequences in relation to heritable differences in phenotypes. However, as I will illustrate, there is increasing evidence that epigenetic processes can and do also contribute to the inheritance of characters. This additional source of variation may explain part of the so-called "missing heritability" that affects most genome-wide association studies.
