In this lecture, given in 1996 at a colloquium in honor of Jean Dieudonné in Nice, Pierre Deligne, Professor Emeritus at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, and Permanent Professor at IHES from 1970 to 1984, reviews some of the many revolutionary ideas Alexandre Grothendieck, one of the greatest mathematicians of the 20th century, Permanent Professor at IHES from 1958 to 1970, introduced in mathematics.
In this lecture, Pierre Deligne notably discusses Grothendieck’s six functor formalism, referring to the lecture notes by Robin Hartshorne on Residues and Duality. These notes have since been published by the French Mathematical Society, and are available here:
