The induction and the restriction play important roles in the representation theory of Lie groups. Professor Toshiyuki Kobayashi initiated a systematic study of the restriction of representations to general reductive subgroups and established the theory of discretely decomposable restriction. In this talk, we discuss characters, inductions, and restrictions of unitary representations of real reductive groups from the viewpoint of the method of coadjoint orbits. We would like to show that some predictions by the orbit method are true in an asymptotic sense.
