Theta invariants of Euclidean lattices and a question of Quillen

By François Charles

In the classical analogy between number fields and function fields, Euclidean lattices play the role of vector bundles on algebraic curves. Theta invariants play the role of dimensions of cohomology groups. In a 1983 entry of his notebooks, Quillen asked whether theta invariants could be realized as traces of suitable endomorphisms on modules over von Neumann algebras. We will discuss negative and positive answers to Quillen's question.
