On Outer Bounds for the Storage-Repair-Bandwidth Tradeoff of Exact-Repair Regenerating Codes

It has been known for some that it is not possible to achieve the storage-repair bandwidth tradeoff of regenerating codes under exact repair. This then gave rise to the question as to whether or not it is possible to asymptotically approach the tradeoff under exact repair. This has since been shown to be not possible through the derivation of tighter outer bounds on the tradeoff under exact repair. We will present an overview of these results.
