Stein manifolds arise naturally in the theory of several complex variables. This talk will give an informal introduction to some of their topological and symplectic aspects such as: handlebody construction of Stein manifolds; their symplectic counterparts; Weinstein manifolds; flexibility (h-principles) versus rigidity.
