Periods of elliptic surfaces

We explore the images of period maps for moduli spaces of elliptic surfaces with a section. All classical cases of the E_8 transfer conjecture are settled. We verify certain predictions of the Hodge Conjecure for fourfolds, and present a counterexample to the Local Invariant Cycle Theorem with integer coefficients.
