Parameterizing vertical mixing in global ocean models: progress and challenges

Vertical mixing is often regarded as the Achilles' heel of ocean models. Here we review recent progress in parameterizing vertical ocean mixing beneath the surface boundary layer. We also highlight persistent gaps in connecting the resolved large-scale flow with parameterized mixing in global ocean models.
