Dear colleagues,
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Claude Bardos, who died yesterday morning following a stroke, at the age of 86.
Claude Bardos was an outstanding mathematician whose work has had a profound impact on our community, in particular in the areas of kinetic equations, control problems for wave propagation, and many aspects of fluid dynamics, including boundary layer theory and the zero-viscosity limit for incompressible flows.
Over the course of his career, Claude received numerous prestigious distinctions, including:
- • the Edmond Brun Prize (French Academy of Sciences, 1992),
- • the Humboldt Prize (University of Kaiserslautern, Germany, 1993),
- • the Grand Prix Marcel Dassault (French Academy of Sciences, 2003),
- • SIAM Fellow (2011),
- • the Maxwell Prize (ICIAM, 2019).
Beyond his scientific achievements, Claude was an exceptional person. Many of us will remember his kindness, his deep generosity, and his presence at numerous events in the PDE community.
Claude took part in several events of our program at the IHP, notably workshops, and he was still with us last week for a working group.
We extend our most sincere and heartfelt condolences to his family, relatives, friends, and colleagues.
