We discuss containments and equalities between various types of powers of an ideal, and their combinatorial and geometric interpretations. Particularly, we shall see how these containments are closely related to the problem of estimate gaps between optimal and integral optimal solutions to linear programming problems. We shall also investigate invariants associated to and consequences of these containments for the defining ideal of points in projective spaces.
