Collection 2008 - 50th anniversary of the IHES: Theoretical Physics Conference
The year 2008 marked the 50th anniversary of the IHÉS. To celebrate this event several conferences were organized throughout the world, in France, in Japan, in the United States. In particular, IHÉS hosted a conference on theoretical physics in June. The latter featured lectures of prominent theoretical physicists, from various countries.
The lectures and the distribution of their subjects reflected the character of the theoretical physics research performed at IHÉS over the last fifty years. Many lecturers were IHÉS employees or visitors during that time. A few historical reviews were presented. Several talks were dedicated to the mysterious exceptional symmetries of the maximal supergravity and M-theory. A few presentations discussed time-dependence, both in statistical physics and string theory, notably the physics of the de Sitter space. There were several lectures on quantum field theory, its perturbative and non-perturbative dynamics in various spacetime dimensions.
